New York Museums Salute Memorial Day: A Weekend of Appreciation

The Long Island Children’s Museum will be saluting the efforts of all veterans and active duty service members this Memorial Day weekend. LICM is joining with more than 130 cultural institutions in New York State to say “thank you” for the service and sacrifice made by members of the military by providing free museum admission on May 29-30. The museum initiative was spearheaded by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in partnership with the Alliance for the Arts and the Museums Association of New York.

“On this special weekend, the Long Island Children’s Museum wishes to express its gratitude for the sacrifices made by our active duty service members and veterans, as well as their families,” noted Executive Director Suzanne LeBlanc. “As an institution devoted to fostering family engagement, the Children’s Museum is proud to participate in the New York Museums Salute Memorial Day program, which enables families to enjoy the area’s most popular and engaging institutions this weekend. The program serves as an extension of the Children’s Museum’s efforts to assist military families year round.

“As we celebrate Memorial Day this year, it is important to pause, reflect and give thanks to all the men and women who have risked their lives to protect and defend our freedom,” said Gillibrand. “I can think of no better way to give special thanks to them and their families than opening New York’s great cultural institutions, free of charge to our courageous men and women.”
New York is home to more than 1 million veterans and more than 60,000 active service members, reservists and National Guard members who will be eligible to participate in this first ever free cultural weekend.
