The Long Island Children’s Museum, located in Garden City, New York, is a not-for-profit learning laboratory that inspires children and adults through interdisciplinary, hands-on, fun experiences. We currently have the following exciting position available:
Director of Education
The Director of Education has overall responsibility for a large education department, including oversight of all educational content and interpretation, direct supervision of program managers, budget preparation and oversight, grant content development and management, teacher training, and program partnerships. This position participates in strategic planning, the board program committee, relevant cross-departmental teams, and works closely with the Exhibition & Visitor Services Departments.
The ideal candidate is an energetic, passionate visionary, who inspires and leads by example; is self-motivated, organized, and works well both independently and as a team player. Requirements: Master’s Degree, plus 3–5 years of relevant museum experience and excellent writing skills. Experience in/knowledge of children’s museums preferred. Courses/degrees in museum education/museum leadership as well as ability to speak Spanish a plus. EOE.

Volunteer at LICM
Lend a hand at Long Island Children’s Museum and make a difference in the lives of Long Island families. We’re looking for friendly volunteers with a variety of skills to join the LICM team. There are a variety of opportunities and commitment levels available for adults and high school students.
Volunteer Opportunities Include:
Greeter/Ticket Attendant
Create a friendly, welcoming environment for our visitors and set
the stage for the rest of the museum visit. Volunteers help direct
visitors to areas in the museum and answer guest questions.
Assistant Educator
In this position, you will interacts with children and families
and explain gallery elements to visitors to help enrich their
museum experience.
Office Volunteer
Assist administrative staff with mailings, preparing materials
for programs, photocopying, telephone inquiries and general office
duties.
Theatre Assistant
Greet audience members, interact with staff and help run theater
equipment during performances.
Information Desk
Present a friendly and positive demeanor to our visitors as you
welcome them to the museum, answers questions (in person and on the phone)
and provide assistance as they complete membership applications.
Woodshop Assistant
Good with tools? Let LICM provide you with a “workbench away from
home.” Help exhibit staff repair and maintain museum exhibits
to ensure that the museum operates at peak performance.
Gift Shop Assistant
Are you recognized for the perfect gifts you choose? Volunteer
at the LICM store and help visitors select the item that’s just
right from our inventory of unique interactive toys. Cash register
knowledge and retail experience a plus.
Following a personal interview with the Volunteer Coordinator and clearance
by a background check and check of personal references, individuals
are asked to volunteer one day a week, 3½–4 hours per day, during
the Museum’s hours of operation. The morning shift is 9:30 a.m.–1
p.m. and the afternoon shift is 1–5 p.m.
